Greening the Economy: Sustainable Cities

How can we direct urban development toward more sustainable and prosperous outcomes?

This course investigates sustainable cities as economic engines for environmental sustainability. We situate cities in the context of urban sustainability and climate change. 

Sustainable urban transformation refers to multi-dimensional and radical change processes that can effectively direct urban development toward ambitious sustainability and climate goals.

We link the major trends of urbanisation, decarbonization, and sustainability. We investigate urban visions, experiments, and innovations. In addition, we examine practises (what is currently happening in cities) and opportunities (what are the possibilities for cities going forwards into the future).

This course provides key examples of activities aimed at promoting sustainable cities in Scandinavia, Europe, and around the world. To create an online learning community, we bring together a collection of diverse short films and key short readings on sustainable cities, as well as interactive forums and a practical assignment.
