Share Description
This course will examine the modern Middle East's emergence from the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I to the present. We will discuss the Ottoman legacy in the region as well as the impact of Western imperialism on the formation of the Arab state system. The course will examine the rise and fall of Arab nationalism, the problems of internal cohesion in Arab states, religious and state issues, and the evolution of Islamist politics. We will also examine the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact on the region, before concluding with an in-depth examination of the "Arab Spring" by situating these contemporary revolutionary events in their historical context.
